Global Trade Challenges for the New Year

Join us at the Brigham Young University London Centre for an insightful evening discussing global trade challenges as we enter 2025. Hosted by the International and Public Affairs London Office at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Young Diplomats in London, this event features a distinguished panel of experts moderated by David Rutley, former Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

Set in the beautiful location of 27 Palace Court, London W2 4LP, between Notting Hill and Bayswater, this venue has previously hosted high-profile events such as a luncheon for Middle Eastern diplomats and a regional ambassadors conference for Latin American countries.



Chair - David Rutley:

David Rutley served as the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office between 27 October 2022 and 5 July 2024. He was previously the Minister for Welfare Delivery at the Department for Work and Pensions from 17 September 2021 to 20 September 2022. David has also held roles as a Government Whip (2017–2021) and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (2018–2019).

He received a BSc (Econ) from the London School of Economics and an MBA from Harvard Business School. A Conservative MP for Macclesfield from 2010 to 2024, David has served on the Treasury Select Committee and as Parliamentary Private Secretary to various Secretaries of State. Before politics, he held senior executive positions in companies such as Asda, PepsiCo, Halifax General Insurance, and Barclays. From 1994 to 1996, he worked as a Special Adviser at the Treasury, Cabinet Office, and Ministry of Agriculture.

Lew Cramer:

With decades of experience in international business and real estate, Lew Cramer is one of the most well-connected economic development professionals in the Intermountain West. As CEO of Colliers | Utah since 2013, he has been instrumental in helping clients expand and succeed. Lew also serves as a Utah State Transportation Commissioner, assisting in managing the state’s growing transportation systems with an annual budget of nearly $3 billion.

From 2006 to 2013, Lew was the founding president and CEO of World Trade Center Utah, where he played a key role in boosting Utah's international trade, helping the state become the only one in the nation with positive export growth every year for the past decade. He currently serves on the international board of the World Trade Centers Association, which includes over 300 centers in about 100 countries.

Lew's career spans roles such as Director-General of the U.S. Commercial Service under the George H.W. Bush administration, where he led 1,400 commercial officers globally. He also served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for International Trade under the Reagan administration and worked as an international VP at US WEST, developing telecommunications projects in over 20 countries. Lew has taught international business at Georgetown University and real estate law at the University of Southern California

Ayu Maryam:

Ayu Maryam graduated with a Bachelor of Law from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in 2005 and a Master's degree in International Business/Trade/Commerce from University of Indonesia in 2009.

Ayu served as Director of the Indonesian Trade Promotion Centre (ITPC) Sydney from 2019-2022. The ITPC is a non-profit, government agency under the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia that promotes two-way trade engagements between Australia and Indonesia; undertakes market information gathering, analysis, and dissemination to stakeholders; and makes Indonesian products more widely known by facilitating Indonesian trade missions, expos, product promotions, and more.

From 2022-2024, she served as Senior Trade Analyst at the Centre of Strategic Issue of the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia in Jakarta. Ayu has been posted as the Trade Attache at the Indonesian Embassy in London since March 2024.

Dr.Alexandre Genest:

Alexandre Genest is an international arbitration practitioner with experience representing corporations, individuals and States in investor-State and commercial arbitrations.

Alexandre has significant international dispute settlement work experience covering investor-State disputes (ICSID, UNCITRAL, PCA, VIAC), commercial arbitration disputes (ICC) and State-to-State disputes (ICJ, WTO).

Alexandre also carries out legal advisory work for both corporations and States. In particular, Alexandre advises multinational corporations on Canadian sanctions law and modern slavery and supply chains law. Alexandre further advises governments on international trade law.

Over the past 15 years Alexandre worked for the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the Government of Canada and as a lawyer in private practice.
